Personal Belongings and Clothing

Children should wear comfortable clothing appropriate for both indoor and outdoor activities and which the children can easily manipulate to foster independence. Primary children must keep a complete change of clothing (including socks and underwear) appropriate to the season on hand at school for spills and other emergencies. These clothes, as well as those worn to school, should be labeled. They should be packed in a shoebox or clear plastic box with the child's name on it, and brought to school the first day.

We also require parents to buy indoor slippers or rubber-soled shoes for the children to wear in the classroom to help keep the noise level down and for cleanliness reasons. These too should be labeled.

Students may bring books, science specimens, and other items of educational interest to the class but not toys. Since Montessori materials are designed to attract children to specific lessons at the most appropriate age, toys brought from home would be a distraction in the classroom. We will safeguard toys inadvertently brought to school in the school office until the end of the school day.

It is not unusual for parents to occasionally find tiny cubes, puzzle pieces, beads, or other items in pockets, cuffs, or book bags. Please return these items to school as quickly as possible as they will be missed! Components of Montessori materials are each vital and must be replaced if they are not returned.
